Perfecting Your Hi-Fi Setup: Speaker Placement Tips for the Best Sound
At Ruark, we have a deep appreciation for all-in-one music systems—but did you know our journey began with separate loudspeakers?
We’ve never lost our love for true stereo sound, which is why we’re excited to introduce the Sabre-R Bookshelf Speakers, launched alongside our advanced R610 Music Console. A tribute to our first-ever speakers from 1985, Sabre-R is designed to be as visually striking as it is sonically impressive—delivering rich, immersive sound in any home.
But to truly experience the depth and clarity of your music, proper speaker placement is key. Whether pairing Sabre-R with the R610 or another high-end audio system, how and where you position your speakers can dramatically impact sound quality. Factors like room layout, walls, windows, and furniture can all influence acoustics.
Here are our top tips for optimizing your speaker setup and getting the most out of your hi-fi system.

1. Find the Acoustic Sweet Spot
For the best stereo imaging, position your speakers and listening area in an equilateral triangle. Place each speaker at an equal distance from one another, with the listener forming the third point of the triangle.
A simple way to visualize this is by thinking of a sofa placed directly in front of a TV. If the speakers are positioned symmetrically on either side of the screen, the center seat becomes the optimal listening position.
To ensure balanced audio, measure the distance between your speakers and the seating position carefully. For ideal stereo separation, we recommend placing the speakers at least four feet apart.
2. Mind the Walls
For optimal sound, try to position speakers at least two feet away from any wall.
- Placing speakers closer to the back wall will enhance bass response.
- Pulling them further out will create a cleaner, more natural sound with fewer unwanted reflections.
- Avoid placing speakers in room corners, as this can cause excessive bass buildup and muddied audio.
3. Angle for Precision
A slight inward tilt—known as toe-in—can help direct sound towards the listener. Adjust the angle to find the perfect balance:
- For focused listening, angle the speakers directly toward your seat.
- For a wider soundstage (ideal for multiple listeners), reduce the angle slightly.
4. Consider Speaker Height
Sabre-R speakers are designed to perform brilliantly whether placed on a console or speaker stands. However, speaker height should align with ear level for the most natural sound.
- Speaker stands minimize vibrations from furniture and offer more flexibility in positioning.
- Media consoles provide a practical setup, though consider height adjustments if needed.
5. Room Acoustics Matter
Your room’s layout and furnishings play a major role in sound quality.
- Hard surfaces (like bare floors, large windows, and minimal furniture) create more reverb and reflections, potentially making the sound feel cluttered. Adding a rug, curtains, or cushions can help dampen excessive reflections.
- Too many soft furnishings can absorb too much sound, making audio feel flat. Balancing textures in your space ensures a natural, dynamic sound.
- Avoid placing large furniture between your speakers and listening area, as it can obstruct sound waves and affect clarity.
